Cellphones can already do what someone referred to above (bluetooth enabled ones, at least): With a bluetooth cellphone and bluetooth computer and a program free on the internet called SallingClicker, I believe, you can perform all the functions described above and more.

Next, I believe IPods have harddrives, not flash memory... just to clarify for the person who called it a "flash disk." This is no kind of innovation: they make portable flash drives and hard drives for much cheaper than an IPod.

This idea may be a cute little invention, but honestly, it serves almost no practical purpose and in essence, just takes away from the ordinary functionality of the computer and certainly adds little to nothing to the use of an IPod. I doubt Apple will produce these just because of how useless an idea it is. I mean, is it really worth it to combine two expensive gadgets in order to perform functions they can both perform on their own? What's the point?

The invention/advancement/improvement is the integration of an excellent media player interface into a laptop. Sure, you can use your mouse to click/drag all over the place, but the ipod interface is much more intuitive to begin with. If you disagree, you can take comfort in the fact that stupid patents are awarded every other day. You know howmany perpetual energy generators are on file at the US Patent office?

They should have put the ipod like an external bay (PCMICA-likk) fully integrated with the laptop. Think about it, you can finally move data in and out of your laptop with a 20-40gig flash disk. Obivously they should have some function to play your ipod song thru the laptop too :D

This patent doesn't make much sense. Take your iPod out, and there's no trackpad, making the computer useless. A broken iPod would mean a broken laptop.

A far better idea would be an iPod with Bluetooth that could serve as a remote for any Bluetooth-equipped Mac, with the iPod screen displaying useful information. You could use it to control a Powerpoint presentation, to run iTunes, to stop and start DVD playback, or even to read email from the comfort of a lounge chair on the patio. An iPod would become an extension of your Mac, desktop or laptop. Now that would leave Windows users green with envy!
