Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T5 Review - Steves Digicams

Oct 14, 2005 | Category: Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T5

Sony’s new Cyber-shot DSC-T5 digital camera is ultra slim so it’s always with you and always ready to capture great pictures. It incorporates a high resolution 5-megapixel Sony imager with an internal Carl Zeiss 3x optical zoom lens that opens instantly when the camera is activated. The camera features a large 2.5-inch color LCD viewfinder, occupying roughly two-thirds of the back of the camera.

The T5 is a robust performer. From sliding open the lens cover till the first shot was captured measured an impressive 1.5 seconds; you will not miss many unposed spontaneous photo opportunities. Shutter lag, the time between depressing the shutter and capturing the image, measured 1/10 second when pre-focused, and lag including autofocus was an equally impressive 3/10 second; both of these times include about 1/10 second of delay in the live image on the LCD viewfinder. In single shot mode, images could be captured at a rate of 1 every 8/10 second with Auto Review off, or 1 per second with Auto Review on. Using flash, shot-to-shot time ranged between 1.5 and 4 seconds depending on subject distance.

And don’t worry about your battery keeping up with you; Sony’s Real Imaging Processor power management system lets you shoot full resolution images in seconds. At 240 shots per charge, the Cyber-shot T5’s InfoLithium® T series battery won’t let you down.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T5 Review - DCRP

Aug 29, 2005 | Category: Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T5

The Cyber-shot DSC-T5 ($349) is the latest addition to Sony’s line of ultra thin cameras. The T5 takes styling cues from the original DSC-T1 (and the more recent DSC-T7 as well), with its unique slide-down lens cover. Other features on the T5 are typical of what you’ll find in this class: the 5 Megapixel CCD, 2.5″ LCD, point-and-shoot operation, and VGA movie mode. Unfortunately, some not-so-good things also come along with this design, and I’ll cover them below.

As is the case with Sony’s other recent cameras, the T5 does not include a memory card. Instead, Sony has built 32MB of memory right into the camera. That doesn’t hold too many 5 Megapixel photos, so buying a memory card is a requirement. Like the other T-series cameras, the T5 uses Memory Stick Duo cards, which are available as large as 2GB. These cards are smaller than regular Memory Sticks, and an adapter is included so you can use them in things with regular MS slots. The downside with MS Duo cards is that they’re expensive — a 1GB card will set you back $105, while an equivalent SD card costs $88.

The DSC-T5 uses the same NP-FT1 battery as the DSC-T1 and T33. This battery has just 2.4 Wh of energy, which about as low as you’ll find. Thankfully, Sony engineers figured out how to get as much out of that little battery as they possible could.
