This update to the original sleek and sexy Olympus Stylus Verve boasts 1 million more pixels and slightly improved performance, but it still suffers from average image quality, an anemic electronic flash, and a limited 2X zoom (35mm-to-70mm equivalent on a 35mm-film camera).
If you put a higher priority on stylish features than functions and options, this conversation piece provides acceptable snapshots for small prints with a minimum of user involvement. If you need manual controls other than EV adjustments, you’re out of luck. However, the Olympus Stylus Verve S / µ(mju:)-mini Digital S’s 16 scene modes handle most shooting situations, and its clutch of special effects, including fish-eye and soft-focus looks, are fun to use. Its water-resistant “all weather” ruggedness, which includes a gasketed lens cover and battery compartment door, should make this camera popular among the outdoors set.

While the Olympus Stylus Verve / µ(mju:)-mini Digital will draw many of its users based on its appearance, the camera is an average with some strong limitations. The camera offers adequate color and resolution capabilities but is drastically limited by an inability to control noise in restricted lighting and will force the user to rely on the fixed in-camera flash. The Verve’s stylish design contains a smooth 1.8 LCD screen that projects one of the brighter, more visible images I have seen in low light. With an affordable price tag, currently below the $300 USD mark, the camera is designed for the fashion-conscious user who wants something portable and stylized that they can throw in their pocket and carry along on a night on the town. While the camera’s restricted performance elements strongly limits the Verve’s user base, it will fit the needs of the beginner or true point-and-shooter with minimal interest in manual control and a strong preference for style.

Presenting the Olympus Mju Mini Digital / Olympus Stylus Verve: on paper, a compact digital camera with 4 megapixels, 2x optical zoom lens that’s equivalent to 35-70mm on a 35mm camera, 1.8 inch LCD monitor, all housed in a weather-proof metal body. So far, so run-of-the-mill. Lots of other digital cameras offer a similar if not better specification at the same pricepoint, so why should you consider the Olympus Mju Mini Digital / Olympus Stylus Verve? Take it out of the box and you soon see why - Olympus have designed one of the most stylish compact digicams on the market today. The Olympus Mju Mini Digital / Olympus Stylus Verve looks breath-taking in all the glossy product shots and thankfully it doesn’t disappoint by being just as eye-catching in real life, with an anodised finish in iPod-like colours and that curved end which has never been seen before in the photography world.

The Olympus Stylus Verve / µ(mju:)-mini Digital is equipped with an optical zoom, we would have preferred a 3x optical zoom. The images are bright and clear and the excellent macro function does its job fantastically. A strong trump, rich details and a fabulous resolution. Some distortion is found, especially at wide angle images. The images taken with a tiny bit more zoom are rather neutral, as far as distortion is concerned. All in all the Olympus Mju mini Digital is a very pleasant camera to work with. This model belongs to the 2e generation of Olympus digital Mju cameras. And it goes without saying: the result is praiseworthy. A waterproof housing, a fantastic design and the user-friendly operation seem the ideal combination to hold a successfully vendible product. The Mju-mini is the perfect camera for someone who loves the design and besides that looks for a camera with an easy operation and a photo-realistic end result. In short, a recommendable camera!
