The Fujifilm FinePix Z1 is flat, without any protuberances, and roughly the same size as a deck of cards. It offers a 5.1 megapixel resolution using a Fujifilm CCD HR and has a fully internal 3X optical zoom.
While we could have wished the FinePix Z1’s monitor to have a even higher resolution and an even better image, the Z1 is nevertheless an attractive camera: its finishing is flawless and its few external controls clearly designed for efficiency and ease of use. The Z1 starts up quickly — it is ready to shoot in under a second — and reacts instantly to its controls, including the shutter release.

The FinePix Z1’s sleek and strong all-metal body is sure to draw attention. Available in two colors — sophisticated black and a stunning brushed silver — the Z1 is as trim as they come in the world of digicams, measuring a mere 18.6 millimeters thick – thinner than a deck of cards. The Fujifilm FinePix Z1 is among Fujifilm’s latest ultracompact digital cameras, and offers a great combination of ease of use, style, and image quality (particularly at higher ISO sensitivities). Based on a fifth-generation Super CCD HR chip design, the Fujifilm Z1 offers good resolution in a pocket-friendly body, with a resolution of 5.1 megapixels. With a prism-folded 3x zoom lens that contributes to the camera’s compact size, and straightforward user interface, the Fuji Z1 is an excellent take-anywhere point and shoot model that should appeal to novice users and more experienced shooters alike. It has a refined feel that is best experienced to appreciate.
In addition to the 3x optical zoom, the Fuji Z1 offers as much as 5.7x digital zoom, depending on the image quality setting, but keep in mind that digital zoom decreases the overall image quality, since it just crops out the center pixels of the CCD’s image. For framing shots, the FinePix Z1 offers no true optical viewfinder, only a color LCD monitor - although at 2.5-inches it is fairly generous in size. An information overlay reports camera settings (including aperture and shutter speed) on the LCD monitor. There are also two less common record-mode displays. In the first, a framing guideline option displays an alignment grid which divides the image area into thirds, both horizontally and vertically, making it easier to line up tricky subjects. Even more unusual, the post-shot assist display mode shows the last three images captured since switching the camera to record mode alongside a live view, to assist in framing shots with similar composition.

The Fujifilm FinePix Z1 features the same CCD technology as that found in the FinePix F10, it’s SuperCCD HR technology providing 5.1-million pixel resolution in an extremely svelte package. The camera is so thin because it incorporates a lens with folded optics that enable a non-extending 3x zoom lens to be crammed within its body; it’s similar to the lens technology developed by Konica Minolta for its ‘X’ series cameras and also featuring in Sony’s ‘T’ series models and Nikon’s Coolpix S1.
While the lack of manual controls may put some off, the Z1 offers an ideal combination of point and shootability with bags of style – despite the handling compromises. And like the F10 before it, Fuji’s Super CCD HR sensor with which the Z1 is equipped works well; the Z1 is capable of producing stunning images and I can recommend it heartily.
