Canon Powershot SD950 IS Digital ELPH Review - ImagingResource

Dec 09, 2007 | Category: Canon Powershot SD950 IS

Featuring a 12.1 megapixel CCD, 3.7x optical zoom lens, and well-designed user interface, the Powershot SD950 IS Digital ELPH has a compact body style that is well suited for travel. Exposure remains under automatic control, and its 11 pre-programmed Scene modes help with more tricky subjects.

The Canon SD950 IS is a very responsive camera, with low shutter lag in daylight conditions, and excellent shot-to-shot speeds. It also sports very good battery life, a capable Movie mode, and excellent download speed. Finally, Canon makes a line of accessories including a slave flash, and even an underwater case for it as well, expanding your options beyond what you’d normally expect from a compact digital camera. The bright 2.5-inch color LCD monitor is excellent for framing and reviewing shots, and the overall design and layout of the SD950 is user-friendly and hassle-free. Printed output is astonishingly good, producing impressive 16×20-inch prints, and even ISO 400 shots are good at 11×14.

If you’re looking for a good, take-anywhere camera with great versatility and good color and tonality, the Canon SD950 deserves a close look.

Canon Powershot SD950 IS Review - PopularPhotography

Oct 28, 2007 | Category: Canon Powershot SD950 IS

Even with good lighting conditions at the beach town of Cape May, the camera’s image stabilization came in handy when shooting at longer focal lengths, as the maximum aperture at the camera’s longest focal length of 133mm (35mm equivalent) is f/5.8, just over two stops higher than the overall maximum aperture of f/2.8. Images were crisp and generally well exposed, and while the housing feels nearly as durable as a solid piece of metal, the lightweight pocket cam didn’t weigh me down.

The LCD was visible even in bright sunlight and focus was fast in all situations with a negligible shutter delay after focus was established. When using the flash, shot-to-shot time was a bit sluggish, but not painfully slow. The battery never showed any signs of wearing down despite hours of shooting and review with the built-in LCD. The camera has a CIPA rating of 240 shots with the LCD on and 580 shots when you keep it off.

Overall, Canon hit the mark with their SD950 IS, providing optical image stabilization, 12.1-megapixels, and overall good performance in a slim, rugged, pocket-sized package.

Canon Powershot SD950 IS Review - CNET

For a 12-megapixel compact camera, the Powershot SD950 IS fares well. But, if you don’t feel you need so many pixels, and unless you plan to print 11×17-inch images regularly, then you can probably get faster performance by choosing a camera with fewer megapixels, such as Canon’s 8-megapixel Powershot SD870 IS - but you will have to give up the optical viewfinder if you do.
