Canon’s original EOS Digital Rebel, released almost two years ago, was notable for several reasons. It was the first digital single-lens reflex (or SLR) camera with interchangeable lenses priced under $1,000; it introduced Canon’s EF-S lens mount, which allowed for smaller, lighter lenses more appropriate to a digital SLR; and most importantly, it delivered image quality identical to Canon’s mid-range, more expensive EOS 10D. Now Canon has finally released the first upgrade to the Rebel, called the EOS Digital Rebel XT.

Canon Digital Rebel XT / EOS 350D Review - Luminous Landscape
Canon Digital Rebel XT / EOS 350D is a sweet little camera that could well be the best DSLR camera value on the market today (March, 2005). Newcomers will find the price to be right and the camera to be feature rich. Experienced photographers will be frustrated by some of the interface problems, but none of these are really show-stoppers.
Now, if Canon would just hire a few photographers to take prototype cameras for a walk around the block before committing to some of the more egregious design bloopers that it insists on foisting on us, then they really might become the 800 pound gorilla in the digital camera market that they clearly aspire to be.
Canon Digital Rebel XT / EOS 350D Review - BIOS
Canon’s EOS 350D Digital (Digital Rebel XT in the US) combines ease of use, a robust design, and many of the same compelling technologies found in Canon’s professional series EOS cameras, making it an excellent camera for the money. Image quality is up slightly on its predecessor thanks to a new CMOS sensor and improved DIGIC image processing, its high-ISO performance was impressive, and its low shutter lag and nearly instant power on time will prove popular for impulsive snappers. For travellers wanting a powerful digital camera with the option of different lenses, you’ll not find a more portable or capable SLR in this price range.

Canon Digital Rebel XT / EOS 350D Review - The-Digital-Picture
I think the Canon EOS 350D Digital Rebel XT is an excellent value. It will be the right camera for many people. And it may be the camera to meet Canon’s high Digital SLR sales projection.
